James F. Kenefick, Chairman

Mr. Kenefick is Managing Partner of Working Excellence, a corporate strategic advisory firm that delivers immediate results and lasting value - based on the best practices of triple bottom line principles: people, planet, and profits. From 2007- 2009, Wex co-developed the strategy, fund raising, sector research for Iron Leaf Capital, a $200M late stage growth fund for Green Technology/Building Materials/Systems that focus on efficiency and savings. Jim's CEO & Co-Founding experience includes leading 3 companies to revenue growth of US$0-15M, $0-30M and $0-70M as well as raising over $450M in capital to create companies worth over $750M in market cap all within 10 years. Over the last 10 years, he has directed his focus toward creating, advising & investing in Sustainable Companies focused around SAAS, Managed Voice / Data Services, Health Care -Electronic Records Management, Nutrition, Paperless Bill Processing Systems and Electronic Ticket Systems that are Positive Impact Companies. Twice named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist. He is a Trustee & Former International Board Member of Entrepreneurs Organization.


Matt Bauer, President & Co-Founder

Matt has worked to improve communities in the U.S. and abroad in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors for more than 20 years. Before co-founding BetterWorld Telecom in 2003, Matt served in a series of leadership roles in the telecommunications and power industries, including the AES Corporation, NETtel Communications and Valucom.

He has either helped found or grow a number of non-profits over the past 10 years including Lowcountry Local First (Charleston founder), DC-based Sitar Center for Children and the Arts (D.C.), and the True Colors Theatre Company (Atlanta). Matt is a member of the Full Circle Fund, Social Venture Network, and serves on the national board of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) and the steering committee for the American Sustainable Business Council & Ashoka's Youth Venture - Bay area.

Matt is co-editor and author of the  Nonprofit Guide to Going Green, published by Wiley & Sons in December, 2009 and holds a BA in Telecommunications from Indiana University and MBA from The George Washington University. Matt lectures/speaks nationally on sustainability and telecommunications, most recently at 2010 NetImpact Annual Conference, Evergreen State College, Green Telecom East, CTIA Green Telecom Summit, the FCC Broadband Workshop Series, Nokia Siemens Green Telecom Summit  and as a CAIR at Bainbridge Graduate Institute.


Glenn Powell, Director of Operations

In his 30 years of competitive telecommunications industry experience, Glenn has developed a wide breadth of knowledge about all aspects of the planning, pricing, marketing, sales and delivery of voice and data services. Before joining BetterWorld Telecom, Glenn served as Director of Product Development at CCMI, where he defined new products, services and conferences for this industry leading telecommunications information services provider. Before joining CCMI, Glenn was Vice President of Markets and Product Development for the AES Corporation, a Fortune 200 independent power company, where he led the planning for a CLEC in the top 35 US markets and helped launch a telecommunications business in Bolivia. Previously, Glenn served a number of roles over 13 years including Senior Vice President and General Manager for Valucom, Inc., a telecommunications analysis, publishing, consulting and pricing information services company.

Prior to Valucom, Glenn served in a number of capacities at MCI Telecommunications and Satellite Business Systems including rates and tariffs; product management; project management for the implementation of a nationwide satellite/switching center network; managing a 225 person inbound/outbound sales and customer service center; and providing sales support for a large national accounts sales organization. He has also served in a number of volunteer positions associated with youth sports, the Cub Scouts, and is currently President of the Cardinal Hill Swim and Racquet Club, a neighborhood swim and tennis facility which supports a number of children and adult recreational programs. Glenn holds a BA in economics from Virginia Tech.


Ali Gunertem, Director of Customer Operations & Co-Founder

Ali joined BetterWorld Telecom (“BWT”) in the fall of 2003 and brings over 18 years of experience. He has spent the past ten years working in telecommunications, with extensive experience working with carriers and network vendors in all aspects of provisioning, customer VoIP implementations and customer support. He has extensive knowledge of carrier services including both voice and data systems. He is responsible for the company’s day-to-day customer support, VoIP planning and provisioning and technical support. Prior to joining BWT, Ali worked as the General Manager at Cities Restaurant Group, based in Washington, D.C. He has extensive experience in sales, staff management, project management, fundraising, billing and networking. He received his Bachelors of Arts degree from Marmara University at Istanbul. He is married and has a daughter. He currently resides in Alexandria, VA.


John (JP) McCormick, Director of Sales & Co-Founder

J.P. joined BetterWorld Telecom in the fall of 2002 and brings more than 15 years of sales experience to BetterWorld Telecom. Prior to joining BetterWorld, J.P. worked for MCI, MFS, Westinghouse Communications, Qwest and Level Three Communications. J.P Graduated from West Virginia University in 1989. J.P. and his wife, Lisa, live in Alexandria Virginia.


David O'Leary, Director of IT

David has more than 20 years experience in telecom and network services and equipment sales and product management. Throughout the 1980s, he held engineering, operations and customer support, and operations management positions at Carnegie-Mellon University, the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and SURAnet — part of the original NSFnet. From 1992 to 1998, he worked at Cisco Systems, providing consulting services for large enterprise and service provider customers worldwide. He contributed to product developments such as the Cisco 12000, 7500, and 2500 series routers. From 1998 to 2005, he served as Director of Consulting Engineering at Juniper Networks, leading a team of engineers providing key customer consulting and technical support for the first customer deployments growing to over $1 billion in revenues. He supported customer network design and deployment efforts around the world, and contributed to many key Juniper Network product decisions.

He joined Better World Telecom in the fall of 2006, supporting sales and operations efforts. David enjoys hiking, backpacking and canoeing in his spare time. He volunteers with the Sierra Club, where he is currently focused on the climate change and smart energy solutions campaigns.


Gloria Costa, Manager of Regulatory and Administration

Gloria joined BetterWorld in the spring of 2006 and brings over 18 years of experience to BetterWorld Telecom. She is responsible for regulatory issues and proposal administration. Prior to joining BetterWorld, Gloria worked in various positions within the telecommunications industry for Bell Atlantic, Nortel, Williams and Nextira One. Gloria is married to Joe, has one son; and after spending all her life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she now resides on Lake Marion in Manning, South Carolina.

Joe Londeree, Regulatory and Customer Service Analyst

Joe joined BetterWorld Telecom (“BWT”) in the spring of 2008. He is responsible for the company’s day-to-day customer and regulatory issues, as well as technical support. Prior to joining BWT, Joe worked in engineering for Mitsubishi (Braselton, GA) and Westinghouse (Athens, GA). He has extensive experience working with sales, managing staff, project management, and accounting. He received his Bachelors degree from Ohio State University and a Masters from the University of Georgia. He is married to Leah and currently resides in Manning, SC.


Salem Kimble

Salem Kimble, Social Media Development Manager

Salem has been working with BetterWorld since 2009. She is responsible for raising awareness about BetterWorld Telecom's unique value offerings in the telecom industry and the benefits of BetterWork. She works both online and offline to engage customers, partners and the larger business and non-profit communities. Salem has worked with a wide variety of for-profit and not-for-profit companies in sustainable tourism, law, dance and environmental education. Salem also manages the Sustainable Enterprise Cluster at the David Brower Center in Berkeley, CA. She holds a BA in Global Studies from UC Santa Barbara and resides in Oakland, CA.
