The First B Corporation Annual Report
Just taking a moment to observe a great signpost in the road: B Labs released its First Annual B Corporation Report in the past week and we congratulate them on their amazing progress in helping to define a new class of corporation.
In less than five years years, B Corp (B = “For Benefit) has moved from idea, to concept, off the drawing board and now to the first annual report is a great testament to the progress that has been made. As a founding B Corp, BetterWorld was fortunate to be involved in the early discussions around the B Corp concepts, which we embraced as the holistic environmental and social framework that BetterWorld has sought to become.
Growing off the roots of accountability, standards, and transparency the B Corp goal is to produce a sustainable corporate model that creates economic opportunity, a healthy environment, and strong communities. In less than five years certified B Corporations now number more than 220, across 54 industries, in 28 States, $1.1B in revenues and $6.8B in investment assets.
The value being created by B Lab goes well beyond the certification and marketing of B Corporations. The legal framework and performance standards developed for B Corps are already influencing public policy and the capital markets. Our hats off to B Labs and our friends/ partners/ customers at Sustainable Industries for producing an amazing report and we look forward to the B Corp model becoming the mainstream model of coprorate citizenship in the U.S. and beyond in the coming years.
